Security Door Ratings

Security Door Ratings

Across Europe, high-security doors are tested under the EN 1627 burglary resistance standard. This testing framework measures how effectively a complete door system can resist forced entry using defined tools and attack techniques.

The results determine the Resistance Class rating of the door, commonly referred to as RC3, RC4 and RC6. These classifications allow property owners, architects and developers to understand the level of physical protection a door system can provide for different types of residential property.

During testing, the complete door system is evaluated, including the door leaf, locking mechanism, hinges and surrounding frame. Every component must work together to resist forced entry. If any element fails during testing, the door cannot achieve the required resistance classification.

Understanding Resistance Classes

Resistance Classes measure how long a door can withstand continuous attack using specific tools. The longer the resistance time and the heavier the tools used during testing, the higher the security classification of the door.

For luxury residential properties, the most commonly specified levels are RC3, RC4 and RC6. Each level represents an increasing level of protection against burglary attempts and targeted forced entry.

RC3 Security Doors

RC3 security doors provide strong resistance against forced entry using leverage tools such as crowbars and pry bars. This level is commonly recommended for luxury apartments and villas where entrances may be more exposed or accessible.

For many high-value residential properties, RC3 offers an excellent balance between increased protection and architectural flexibility.

RC4 Security Doors

RC4 security doors provide a significantly higher level of protection against more aggressive attack methods involving heavy tools such as hammers, chisels and axes.

These doors are often specified for luxury homes, high-value villas and properties where a stronger level of physical security is required at the primary entrance.

RC6 Security Doors

RC6 security doors represent one of the highest burglary resistance levels available under European testing standards. These doors are engineered to resist sustained attack using heavy-duty power tools such as angle grinders and high-powered drills.

RC6 doors are typically specified for ultra high-value residential properties, secure facilities and safe rooms where maximum resistance to forced entry is required.

Choosing the Right Security Level

The correct resistance class depends on the property, the surrounding environment and the level of security risk. For many luxury residential properties, RC3 or RC4 doors provide an excellent balance between protection and practicality.

For properties requiring enhanced protection, RC6 doors may be specified alongside reinforced glazing, multi-point locking systems and smart access control technology to create a complete entrance security solution.
